What is MOV?
MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. The format was created by Apple Computer to work with multimedia files. Quicktime is a multimedia development, storage, and playback technology from Apple. If you're emailing a clip or simply need more storage space, set the preferences for files that use the MOV extension to make the most efficient use of your storage space. Tracks are maintained in a hierarchical data structure consisting of objects called atoms. An atom can be a parent to other atoms or it can contain media or edit data, but it cannot do both. Files that use the MOV file extension are created by QuickTime, Apple's media software. Using a Quicktime player that either comes with a Web browser or can be downloaded from Apple or the browser company, you can view and control brief multimedia sequences. However, MOV files can become very large, as they contain video, audio, text, effects and other information that make the media engaging. Of course, compressing a MOV file can help save storage space and make it easier to download and distribute the video file. Though MOV files are quite often found in the web, to play them on Windows computer one has to install an extra component or convert to other format. A more recent version, QuickTime X, is currently available on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion. If you want to play MOV files on your computer, you'll have to download Apple's own Quicktime player from its website. Software development kits (SDKs) for QuickTime are available to the public with an Apple Developer Connection (ADC) subscription. Open and view the .mov file using the default media player installed on your system.

What is OGV?
The OGV and OGM file extensions correspond to the Ogg Vorbis Video File format. OGGs use specialized Ogg Vorbis encoding techniques to create high-resolution video files in small containers. The predecessor On2 TrueMotion VP3 was originally a proprietary and patent-encumbered video codec developed by On2 Technologies. Theora is an open and royalty-free lossy video compression technology being developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as part of their Ogg project. Based upon On2 Technologies' VP3 codec, Theora competes with MPEG-4, WMV, and similar low-bitrate video compression schemes. This is also true for videos encoded with any implementation of the Theora I specification since the format freeze. In any case, the differences in quality, bitrate and file size between a YouTube H.264 video and a transcoded Ogg video file are negligible. The Theora I bitstream format was frozen in June 2004 after the libtheora 1.0alpha3 release. Theora is in full public release as of November 3, 2008. The bitstream format for Theora I was frozen Thursday, 2004 July 1. All bitstreams encoded since that date will remain compatible with future releases. A May 2009 review of this work shows a considerable improvement in quality, both subjectively and as measured by PSNR, just by improving the forward DCT and quantisation matrices. Further work on adaptive quantization, as well as overall detailed subjective tuning of the codec, is still to come. Theora supports intra-coded frames and forward-predictive frames, but not bi-predictive frames which are found in H.264 and VC-1. The Theora I Specification was completely published in 2004. Any later changes in the specification are minor updates.
