What is DVD?
DVD stands for Digital Versatile/Video Disc. While all VOB files are MPEG
program streams, not all MPEG program streams comply with the definition
for a VOB file. Commercial DVD movies are encoded using a combination of
MPEG-2 compressed video and audio of varying formats (often multi-channel
formats as described below). Subtitles are usually intended as a visual
help for the deaf and hearing impaired and for translating dialogs. One
of the best features of DVD drives is that they are backward-compatible
with CD-ROMs, meaning they can play old CD-ROMs, CD-I disks, and video
CDs, as well as new DVD-ROMs. Each DVD-Video disc contains one or more
region codes, denoting the area(s) of the world in which distribution and
playback are intended. The commercial DVD player specification dictates
that a player must only play discs that contain its region code. Almost
all DVD-Video discs use the UDF bridge format, which is a combination of
the DVD MicroUDF (a subset of UDF 1.02) and ISO 9660 file systems. VOB
files are a very strict subset of the MPEG program stream standard. Columbia
TriStar Home Entertainment has created a line of DVDs (dubbed "Superbit")
aiming to maximize picture quality by eliminating multiple languages, angles,
and audio tracks. This allows average bitrates closer to 6 Mbit/s. Subtitles
are restricted to four colors, including transparent "color",
and thus tend to look cruder than permanent subtitles on film. DVD Video
may also include up to 32 subtitle or subpicture tracks. DVD-Video discs
respectively refer to properly formatted and structured video content.
It uses MPEG-2 for video compression, with AC-3, DTS or MPEG audio for
multi-channel audio support.
What is Xvid?
Xvid is a open source MPEG-4 video codec popularized by the Internet. Xvid
videos can be compressed into an archive file to save hard drive space
and lessen download times. Since Xvid uses MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile
(ASP) compression, any video that is encoded with it is termed "MPEG-4
ASP video" - not "Xvid video" - and can therefore be decoded
with all MPEG-4 ASP compliant decoders. Xvid does not spy on you, is totally
ad-free and does not transmit any of your data behind your back. Since
the source code of Xvid is available to the public, everyone can check
for themselves and see that there's no malicious code in Xvid. This constant
review by independent third parties makes Xvid really safe to use. Files
encoded with global motion compensation, Qpel, MPEG quantization, multiple
B-frames or files that exceed the VBV limitations may not play back properly
on DivX Certified hardware devices. To give an example: uncompressed digital
video is huge and requires about 100 GB per hour at PAL resolution. The
same video would require just 500 MB per hour at very high quality when
compressed with Xvid. That is a compression ratio of 200:1. Xvid encoded
files can be written to a CD or DVD and played in some (not all) DivX compatible
DVD players and media players. However, Xvid can optionally encode video
with advanced MPEG-4 features that most DivX Certified set-top players
do not support. XviD-compressed videos can be 200 times smaller than the
source video, with the visual quality well intact. Sigma Designs promised
to rewrite their codec, but in fact they simply masked it. There were still
XviD elements in the REALmagic MPEG-4 video codec. The issue made its way
to public media, and Sigma Designs had to give in.
