What is TS?
Transport stream (TS, TP, MPEG-TS, or M2T) is a communications protocol
for audio, video, and data which is specified in MPEG-2 Part 1, Systems
(ISO/IEC standard 13818-1). As an MPEG format, there are a variety of players
and methods to play back TS files or to "convert" them to more
compliant MPEG-2 files for authoring as DVD / HD DVD. It is also known
as ITU-T Rec. H.222.0. Its design goal is to allow multiplexing of digital
video and audio and to synchronize the output. MPEG-2 is the format used
in the DVD-Video format and is also part of the HD DVD specification, although
it has trouble competing with more compressible formats such as VC-1 and
H.264. The transport stream is designed to address only the delivery. Storage
applications use the program stream. TS files are nowadays very wide spread
on the Internet as (usually split) recordings from HDTV broadcasts. The
transport stream allows for multiplexing of the digital video and audio,
which means the data is combined into a single synchronous transmission
bit stream, for transmission over a variety of standard mediums such as

What is Xvid?
Xvid is an open source video compression format and is a direct competitor
to the proprietary DivX format. The XviD codec makes it possible to compress
a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on one or two CDs, depending
on the length of the movie. To play XviD videos you first need to install
the XviD codec on your computer. Sigma Designs was contacted and confirmed
that a programmer had based REALmagic on Xvid, but assured that all GPL
code would be replaced to avoid copyright infringement. The extensive hardware
support eases data exchange between portable, home and other types of devices.
GNU-licensed 1.0.x releases enjoyed greater freedom, although there are
still legislative restrictions on XviD use in some regions. The codec is
available for free, and it is incorporated in many hardware devices. When
Sigma Designs released the supposedly rewritten REALmagic codec, the Xvid
developers immediately disassembled it and concluded that it still contained
Xvid code, only rearranged in an attempt to disguise its presence. Besides
storage and archival purposes, Xvid is also always useful where video shall
be transmitted over a network, e.g. in case you want to share one of your
videos with your friends via the internet. Compressing such video with
Xvid dramatically reduces download times and expensive traffic while retaining
high quality. Xvid is a primary competitor of the DivX Pro Codec. In contrast
with the DivX codec, which is proprietary software developed by DivX, Inc.,
Xvid is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public
License. This also means that unlike the DivX codec, which is only available
for a limited number of platforms, Xvid can be used on all platforms and
operating systems for which the source code can be compiled.
