What is DVR-MS?
DVR-MS (Microsoft Digital Video Recording) is a proprietary video and audio file format, developed by Microsoft. DVR-MS files use MPEG-2 video encoding and AC3 for audio encoding. The Media Center Edition of Windows XP introduced the DVR-MS file with PVR (Personal Video Recorder) capabilities, such as pausing live television programs, time-shifting, and simultaneous recording and playback. The DVR feature of Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista and the Windows 7 version of Windows Media Center create files in this format. They can also played within Windows Media Center, which is included with Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions. The format is designed primarily for recording and playback of television programs recorded on a computer. Microsoft does not, however, provide a generic DirectShow filter to enable playback support in third party DirectShow-based media players on Windows Vista or on Windows XP Media Center Edition. The DVR-MS file type is primarily associated with 'Media Center' by Microsoft Corporation. If a recorded broadcast is marked as copy protected, the resultant DVR-MS file can only be played back on the recording device. Some early freeware applications which convert the files can be found from third parties such as at The Green Button. Video is encoded using the MPEG-2 standard and audio using MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital AC-3 (ATSC A/52). DVR-MS files can be played with Windows Media Player on systems with Windows XP SP1 or later installed. Windows 7 includes built-in support for converting non copy-protected WTV files to DVR-MS. The files are used with Microsoft's Windows Media Center, which can be used as a DVR to view and capture TV shows through your computer.

What is Xvid?
Xvid is a video codec that is used in many video compression formats such as Audio Video Interleave (AVI). Xvid encoded AVI video files supports high quality compressions with fast encoding speeds. To give an example: uncompressed digital video is huge and requires about 100 GB per hour at PAL resolution. The same video would require just 500 MB per hour at very high quality when compressed with Xvid. That is a compression ratio of 200:1. Due to its free availability and developer-friendliness, Xvid is supported by many video related applications. That means there are a lot of applications available that support playback of Xvid video or use Xvid to encode video. With the 1.0.x releases, a GNU GPL v2 license is used with no explicit geographical restriction. However, the legal usage of Xvid may still be restricted by local laws. The source code, however, was placed under a restrictive license and only members of the DivX Advanced Research Centre (DARC) had write access to the project CVS. The format was created to offer a free alternative to other commercial video codecs, and despite being open source its quality and efficiency has made it one of the most popular video codecs online. As an implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2, Xvid uses many patented technologies. For this reason, Xvid 0.9.x versions were not licensed in countries where these software patents are recognized. Sigma Designs promised to rewrite their codec, but in fact they simply masked it. There were still XviD elements in the REALmagic MPEG-4 video codec. The issue made its way to public media, and Sigma Designs had to give in. With usual, so-called proprietary software where source code is not available to the public, users are stuck in case the creating company goes bankrupt or discontinues the product.
