What is M4V?
M4V is a standard file format for the popular Apple iPod devices. By embedding the video in your site rather than linking to it, you ensure that you do not lose traffic from your site when visitors follow the link. The M4V is a standard format and is used on a variety of other products. Apple uses the M4V files to encode TV episodes, movies, and music videos in the iTunes Store. It is also playable by the Android operating system with its video player. Also, embedding it in the content of the site allows greater visibility for the M4V video. M4V is a Mac-based file extension used in the iTunes store. If you download any videos from iTunes, it will have the M4V extension. Although the format is used by the Apple iTunes Store to distribute video, third-party videos can be encoded as M4V files since it is an open format. Embedding an M4V video in a site adds interest and draws visitors' attention. To play a protected M4V file, the computer needs to be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. Most video files downloaded from the iTunes store are not authorized for duplication by anyone other than the copyright holder and thus are stored in protected M4V files. The copyright of M4V files may be protected by using Apple's FairPlay DRM copyright protection. The M4V video file can be embedded on a website in HTML code by using the <video> tag. This tag, introduced in HTML5, makes it simple to embed an M4V file. To play a protected M4V file, your computer must be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. Although many iTunes videos are made freely available, some require purchase before they can be downloaded.

What is OGV?
Developed by the Xiph.org Foundation, the OGV filetype is a filetype commonly used for bitstreaming and lossless file storage. The OGV file extension was created based on the OGG filetype and is specifically associated with video files, but the names OGV and OGG are used interchangeably. Theora is a free and open video compression format from the Xiph.org Foundation. The Theora I bitstream format was frozen in June 2004 after the libtheora 1.0alpha3 release. Theora supports intra-coded frames and forward-predictive frames, but not bi-predictive frames which are found in H.264 and VC-1. Theora is well established as a video format in open source applications, and is the format used for Wikipedia's video content. However, the proposed adoption of Theora as part of the baseline video support in HTML5 resulted in controversy. There is an open source VHDL code base for a hardware Theora decoder in development. Like all our multimedia technology it can be used to distribute film and video online and on disc without the licensing and royalty fees or vendor lock-in associated with other formats. Evaluations of the VP3 and early Theora encoders found their subjective visual quality was inferior to contemporary video codecs. More recently however, Xiph developers have compared the 1.1 Theora encoder to YouTube's H.264 and H.263+ encoders, in response to concerns raised in 2009 about Theora's inferior performance by Chris DiBona, a Google employee. They found the results from Theora to be nearly the same as YouTube's H.264 output, and much better than the H.263+ output. Further work on adaptive quantization, as well as overall detailed subjective tuning of the codec, is still to come.
