What is WebM?
WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide royalty-free, open video compression for use with HTML5 video. The project's development is sponsored by Google Inc. Sorenson Media's online encoding platform now supports VP8 and WebM. Google acquired ON2, the original developer of VP8 technology. VP8 is now an open and free technology. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska. Also ST-Ericsson and Huawei have hardware implementations in their computer chips. NVIDIA has stated that they support VP8 adoption, but they have no specific plans to provide hardware support. VP8's efficient bandwidth usage will mean lower serving costs for content publishers and high quality video for end-users. The codec's relative simplicity makes it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires less manual tuning to produce high quality results. These existing attributes and the rapid innovation we expect through the open-development process make VP8 well suited for the unique requirements of video on the web. WebM features: Low computational footprint to enable playback on any device, including low-power netbooks, handhelds, tablets, etc.; Simple container format; Highest quality real-time video delivery; Click and encode. Minimal codec profiles and sub-options. When possible, let the encoder make the tough choices. Logitech is planning to use WebM as part of a video calling service. A key factor in the web's success is that its core technologies such as HTML, HTTP, and TCP/IP are open for anyone to implement and improve. With video being core to the web experience, a high-quality, open video format choice is needed. WebM is 100% free, and open-sourced under a BSD-style license.

What is MKV?
MKV is a flexible, open standard video file format that has quickly become the preferred file extension for high definition video on the Internet. The source code of the libraries developed by the Matroska Development Team is licensed under GNU L-GPL. Matroska aims to become THE standard of multimedia container formats. Matroska is similar in concept to other containers like AVI, MP4, or Advanced Systems Format (ASF), but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software. The aim of developing Matroska was to provide a flexible and cross-platform alternative to AVI, ASF, MP4, MPG, MOV, and RM. Its main features include fast seeking, high error recovery, modularly extendable, selectable subtitle and audio streams, chapter entries, menus, and streamable over the internet. In 2010, it was announced that the WebM audio/video format would be based on a profile of the Matroska container format together with VP8 video and Vorbis audio. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. This format, with the file extension of '.mkv', is based on EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), which allows changes to be made easily if need be, without breaking old file supports. This is why it is said that "Matroska is designed with the future in mind". All Matroska file types (to include MKV) are open and free to use without license fee. There is just one hitch - there is no standalone hardware player that is capable of playing MKV files.
