What is XVID?
XviD is an open source MPEG-4 video codec library distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Hence, Xvid can somewhat be seen as a ZIP for video. But unlike ZIP, Xvid is not lossless. That means that a video after compression and decompression with Xvid won't be identical to the original source. Typically however, a difference to the source is visually imperceptible. Xvid is Free Software and released under the GNU GPL license. This means that the source code of the software is publically available and programmers are allowed to make modifications to the code. Also, redistribution of Xvid is permitted but only under the terms of the GPL license. XviD ensures fast compression and exceptional quality video performance and exceeds many expensive similar products. With the 1.0.x releases, a GNU GPL v2 license is used with no explicit geographical restriction. However, the legal usage of Xvid may still be restricted by local laws. Primarily due to concerns over patents, the official Xvid web site does not provide binary versions of the Xvid codec. However, it does link to supporting web sites that provide Video for Windows codecs (and DirectShow decoding filters) for Microsoft Windows. The XviD codec makes it possible to compress a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on one or two CDs, depending on the length of the movie. To play XviD videos you first need to install the XviD codec on your computer. In January 2001, DivXNetworks founded OpenDivX as part of Project Mayo which was intended to be a home for open source multimedia projects. OpenDivX was an open-source MPEG-4 video codec based on a stripped down version of the MoMuSys reference MPEG-4 encoder.

What is Android?
Android is the world's most popular smartphone platform. It makes Android-powered phones and tablets easy to use and personalize. The Open Handset Alliance develops the changes to the Linux kernel, in public, with source code publicly available at all times. The rest of Android is developed in private by Google, with source code released publicly when a new version is released. Google acquired Android Inc. on August 17, 2005, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Google. Key employees of Android Inc., including Rubin, Miner and White, stayed at the company after the acquisition. Not much was known about Android Inc. at the time, but many assumed that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone market with this move. At Google, the team led by Rubin developed a mobile device platform powered by the Linux kernel. This customization means that different Android phones can have widely varying user interfaces. Most smart phones - including those using competing operating systems - offer similar overall capabilities, however, including Internet browsing, personal information management, video streaming, and access to a large repository of freeware and payware applications. Research from security company Trend Micro lists premium service abuse as the most common type of Android malware, where text messages are sent from infected phones to premium-rate telephone numbers without the consent or even knowledge of the user. Other malware displays unwanted and intrusive adverts on the device, or sends personal information to unauthorised third parties. Compared to rival mobile operating systems, namely iOS, Android updates are typically very slow in reaching devices, often taking several months from the official Google release date to actually being distributed to devices. This is caused partly due to the extensive variation in hardware of Android devices, for which each update must be tailored, as the official Google source code only runs on their flagship Nexus phone.
