What is RM?
RMVB files, short for Real Media Variable Bitrate, are files commonly used with the RealPlayer media program. These files are made to be compatible with that player but can be used with a variety of media programs, including iTunes. RMVB files can be imported directly from a RealPlayer library and a computer to a iTunes. Once imported, the files will be ready to use immediately on iTunes. Support of RealMedia is available in a wide variety of multimedia players for different architectures/platforms, including RealPlayer and the Real Alternative codec pack. RealVideo can be played from a RealMedia file or streamed over the network using the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), a standard protocol for streaming media developed by the IETF. However, RealNetworks uses RTSP only to set up and manage the connection. The actual video data is sent with their own proprietary Real Data Transport (RDT) protocol. This tactic has drawn criticism because it made it difficult to use RealVideo with other player and server software. However, the open source MPlayer project has now developed software capable of playing the RDT streams. The first version of RealAudio used a proprietary protocol called PNA or PNM to send streaming audio data. RealNetworks later switched to the IETF standardized Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) but they use RTSP only to manage the connection. The actual audio data is sent with their own proprietary RDT protocol, which they initially kept secret. When RealAudio was introduced, RealNetworks disclosed no technical details about the audio format or how it was encoded, but it was soon noticed that some of the audio codecs used in RealAudio were identical to those used in cellular telephones and digital television.

What is MOV?
Common multimedia format often used for saving movies and other video files; uses a proprietary compression algorithm developed by Apple Computer; compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Although this file is created and designed by Apple, the video format has become popular enough that both systems accept .mov content (otherwise, a majority of the video files downloaded form the Internet become unusable on Windows-based systems). The advantage of MOV files is the ability to contain abstract data references for the media data. That means that they can be easily edited - no need to rewrite all media data after editing. A .mov video file is in the default format for all Mac computers. In order to play any .mov file, you must have QuickTime installed on your computer. If you are using a Mac computer, you may already have the application. If you would like to play the .mov file on your Window Media Player application, you must download the QuickTime Alternative application. A more recent version, QuickTime X, is currently available on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion. Of course, compressing a MOV file can help save storage space and make it easier to download and distribute the video file. Each track either contains a digitally encoded media stream (using a specific format) or a data reference to the media stream located in another file. QuickTime is bundled with Mac OS X. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows has always been downloadable as a standalone installation, as well as being bundled with Apple's iTunes. It is a proprietary format, but playable on both Apple and Windows-based computers. Apple provides a version of QuickTime for free (and is automatically installed with the latest versions of iTunes) that can easily handle the MOV video files.
