What is VOB?
VOB is the extension of the files contained in DVD-Video media. All DVD movies are stored in VOB files on DVDs. VOB file contains video, audio, subtitle and menu in stream form. On the DVD, all the content for one title set is contiguous, but broken up into 1 GiB VOB files in the computer compatible file systems for the convenience of the various operating systems. Images, video and audio used in DVD menus are stored in VOB files. Basically VOB file is just a basic MPEG-2 system stream -- meaning that it is a file that contains multiplexed MPEG-2 video stream, audio streams (normally AC3 and DTS formats) and subtitle streams. Since VOB files contain an MPEG-2 video codec, they can be opened and streamed individually with a media player. IFO (information) files contain all the information a DVD player needs to know about a DVD so that the user can navigate and play all DVD content properly, such as where a chapter starts, where a certain audio or subtitle stream is located, information about menu functions and navigation. Authentication of the disc allows the copying of individual VOB files without error, but the encryption keys will not be copied. If the copied undecrypted VOB files are opened in a player, they will request the keys from the DVD-ROM drive and will fail. Windows Media Player, VLC and Media Player Classic are all free applications that support playback for these files. These apps make it possible to view a disc's contents without loading it into a DVD player, and resemble each other closely in terms of media management. MPlayer, VLC media player, GOM player, Media Player Classic and more platform-specific players like ALLPlayer play VOB files.

What is 3GP?
3GP is container formats similar to MPEG-4 Part 14 (MP4), which is also based on MPEG-4 Part 12. Some cell phones use the .mp4 extension for 3GP video. The Macintosh type is: 3GPP. The 3GP file format was designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones. 3GPP allowed use of AMR and H.263 codecs in the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12), because 3GPP specified the usage of the Sample Entry and template fields in the ISO base media file format as well as defining new boxes to which codecs refer. It also contains descriptions of image sizes and bitrate. The MP4 and the AVC file format specifications described usage of MPEG-4 content in the ISO base media file format. 3GPP is the new worldwide standards for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. The 3GP file type is primarily associated with '3GPP'. 3GPP is based on the MPEG-4 standard which was derived from Apple's QuickTime. The 3GP is used on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. It stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC or HE-AAC. For the storage of MPEG-4 media specific information in 3GP files, the 3GP specification refers to MP4 and the AVC file format, which are also based on the ISO base media file format. 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and may have the filename extension ".3gp". Some newer/higher-end phones without 3G capabilities may also playback and record in this format (again, with said limitations).
