What is DIVX?
DivX is a popular format for videos and movies downloaded from peer-to-peer

Part 2 DivX codec and the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC DivX Plus HD codec. The Divx

container format (.mkv), rather than the proprietary DivX Media Format.

the .divx files retain much of the original quality of the DVD, sometimes
the result is even indistinguishable from the source. This new "DivX
Media Format" also came with a "DivX Ultra Certified" profile,
and all "Ultra" certified players must support all "DivX
Media Format" features. In much the same way that media formats such
as DVD specify MPEG-2 video as a part of their specification, the DivX
Media Format specifies MPEG-4-compatible video as a part of its specification.
What is MKV?
The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format,
a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture,
or subtitle tracks in one file. Matroska is designed with the future in
mind. It incorporates features you would expect from a modern container
format, like: Fast seeking in the file, Chapter entries, Full metadata
(tags) support, Selectable subtitle/audio/video streams, Modularly expandable,
Error resilience (can recover playback even when the stream is damaged),
Streamable over the internet and local networks (HTTP, CIFS, FTP, etc),
and Menus (like DVDs have). This measure was put in place by the development
team to ensure that their technology was not devalued through defamation
or incorrect implementations. Its main features include fast seeking, high
error recovery, modularly extendable, selectable subtitle and audio streams,
chapter entries, menus, and streamable over the internet. It was derived
from a project called MCF, but differentiates from it significantly because
it is based on EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), a binary derivative
of XML. Also, not all media players can play this format, even with the
codec pack installed. This coincided with a long coding break by the MCF's
lead developer, during which most of the community quickly migrated to
the new project. Codec, as a word is
an abbreviation of Coder / Decoder. The video stream located in the MKV
file has been "coded" by the source and now it must be "decoded"
by the end user who wishes to play it.
