PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a bitmapped image
format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to improve upon
and replace GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) as an image-file format not requiring
a patent license. The initialism PNG can also be interpreted as a recursive initialism
for "PNG's Not GIF".

What is RM?
RealMedia is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks.
Its extension is ".rm". It is typically used in conjunction with
RealVideo and RealAudio and is used for streaming content over the Internet.
To facilitate real-time streaming, RealVideo (and RealAudio) normally uses
constant bit rate encoding, so that the same amount of data is sent over
the network each second. RealNetworks says that the RealVideo and RealAudio
codecs are not available in source code under the RPSL license. Source
code is available only under RCSL license for commercial porting to non-supported
processors and operating systems. However, Chinese and Japanese content
frequently uses this file type, anime in particular, because of its small
file sizes and high-quality compression. The combination of the audio and
video formats was called RealMedia and used the file extension .rm. However,
the latest version of RealProducer, Real's flagship encoder, reverted to
using .ra for audio-only files, and began using .rv for video files (with
or without audio), and .rmvb for VBR video files. In many cases, web pages
do not link directly to a RealAudio file. Instead, they link to a .ram
(Real Audio Metadata) or SMIL file. This is a small text file containing
a link to the audio stream. The official player for RealVideo is RealNetworks
RealPlayer SP, currently at version 12, and is available for various platforms
including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. Playing it can be done using either
RealPlayer or the simply-named competitor Real Alternative. Both programs
are free. Recently, RealNetworks has introduced a variable bit rate form
called RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB). This allows for better video
quality, however this format is less suited for streaming because it is
difficult to predict how much network capacity a certain video stream will
need.
What is PNG?
PNG (which is pronounced ping) stands for Portable Network Graphics and
is a file format used for graphics and developed as an improvement to the
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format). Besides being a patent and license free
format, PNG has several advantages over GIF - the main ones being alpha
transparency, gamma correction, and two-dimensional interlacing. Alpha
transparency allows what is called anti-aliasing, or making rounded and
curved images that will look good on any background and not just white.
This feature gets rid of the "ghosting" effects that appear in
GIF images. Gamma correction ensures that the image appears clearly in
any gamma-aware environment. In other image formats, images are displayed
darker or lighter when there are gamma differences between platforms. The
two-dimensional interlacing in PNG allows an image to be displayed both
horizontally and vertically. Another important feature of PNG is its compression
algorithm. This non-patented lossless compression scheme uses a special
method called deflate, which predicts the color of each pixel based on
the colors of previous pixels, then filters the predicted color from the
actual color. This filtering allows for easier compression of images, thus
reducing a file size to up to 60%. The PNG image format has a strong core
following, even in the absence of patent issues to support its existence.
It has suffered because of a lack of full support in Internet Explorer,
but continues to offer a robust alternative to the two more common image
formats of GIF and JPEG. With mainstream graphics programs such as Fireworks
and Photoshop offering strong support for the PNG image format, along with
its readily apparent technical superiority to the GIF format, it is likely
that the popularity of PNG will only increase.
