What is 3GP?
Audio and video container format developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP). 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and
may have the filename extension ".3gp". Tailored to the unique
requirements of mobile devices, 3GPP and 3GPP2 take advantage of MPEG-4,
the standard for delivery of video and audio over the Internet. It also
contains descriptions of image sizes and bitrate. Audio imported from CD

copy onto USB devices in the 3GP format. 3GP is defined in the ETSI 3GPP
technical specification. The 3GP file type is primarily associated with

phones without 3G capabilities may also playback and record in this format
(again, with said limitations). Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting
audio and video files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly
used by mobile phones that support video capture. The 3GP is used on 3G
mobile phones but can also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. 3GPP is
the new worldwide standards for the creation, delivery and playback of
multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. For the storage
of MPEG-4 media specific information in 3GP files, the 3GP specification
refers to MP4 and the AVC file format, which are also based on the ISO
base media file format. 3GPP allowed use of AMR and H.263 codecs in the
ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12), because 3GPP specified the
usage of the Sample Entry and template fields in the ISO base media file
format as well as defining new boxes to which codecs refer.
What is WebM?
WebM defines the file container structure, video and audio formats. WebM
files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and
audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure
is based on the Matroska container. Although Google has irrevocably released
all of its patents on VP8 as a royalty-free format, the MPEG LA, licensors
of the H.264 patent pool, have expressed interest in creating a patent
pool for VP8. Conversely, other researchers cite evidence that On2 made
a particular effort to avoid any MPEG LA patents. As a result of the MPEG-LA
threat the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has started an investigation
into the MPEG LA for its role in possibly attempting to stifle competition.
A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container
based on a profile of Matroska. VP8's efficient bandwidth usage will mean
lower serving costs for content publishers and high quality video for end-users.
The codec's relative simplicity makes it easy to integrate into existing
environments and requires less manual tuning to produce high quality results.

have announced support for hardware acceleration of the WebM format. Intel
is also considering hardware-based acceleration for WebM in its Atom-based
TV chips if the format gains popularity. Qualcomm and Texas Instruments
have announced support, with native support coming to the TI OMAP processor.
Chip&Media have announced a fully hardware decoder for VP8 that can
decode full HD resolution VP8 streams at 60 frames per second.
