What is M4V?
The M4V format is used for MPEG-4 videos that are distributed through the iTunes store. The format, with DRM removed, can also be played in the webOS Video Player for use on the Palm Pre, Palm Pixi smartphones. However, unprotected M4V files without AC3 audio may be recognized and played by other video players by changing the file extension from ".m4v" to ".mp4". The differences are the optional Apple's DRM copyright protection, and the treatment of AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio which is not standardized for the MP4 container. There are two definitions for the term M4V. The first is that raw MPEG-4 Visual bitstreams are named .m4v. The second, and much more likely, is that you have legally downloaded a video file from the Apple iTunes store and it has the M4V extension. These files can be movies, TV shows or music videos and all will include Apple's FairPlay DRM copyright protection. To play a protected M4V file, your computer must be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. The M4V is a standard format and is used on a variety of other products. It can also be played with the BS Player Pro. To play a protected M4V file, the computer needs to be authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video. Also, embedding it in the content of the site allows greater visibility for the M4V video. Copy-protected M4V files can only open on a computer, iPod or iPhone authorized by the account used to purchase the file. However, you can view unprotected M4V files with several different software applications. It is used as the default video conversion format for HandBrake and Air Video Server on the Mac.

What is 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some 2G and 4G phones. A 3GP file is always big-endian, storing and transferring the most significant bytes first. Most 3G capable mobile phones support the playback and recording of video in 3GP format (memory, maximum filesize for playback and recording, and resolution limits exist and vary). The 3GP file type is primarily associated with '3GPP'. Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation 3 when it is set to encode to the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices in the 3GP format. 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones and may have the filename extension ".3gp". 3GPP allowed use of AMR and H.263 codecs in the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12), because 3GPP specified the usage of the Sample Entry and template fields in the ISO base media file format as well as defining new boxes to which codecs refer. When transferred to a computer, 3GP movies can be viewed on Linux, Mac, and Windows platforms with MPlayer and VLC media player. Programs such as Media Player Classic, K-Multimedia Player, Totem, RealPlayer, QuickTime, and GOM Player can also be used. 3GP is defined in the ETSI 3GPP technical specification. 3GPP is the new worldwide standards for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. The MP4 and the AVC file format specifications described usage of MPEG-4 content in the ISO base media file format. Some cell phones use the .mp4 extension for 3GP video. 3GPP is based on the MPEG-4 standard which was derived from Apple's QuickTime.
