What is MOV?
MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. The format
was created by Apple Computer to work with multimedia files. Tracks are
maintained in a hierarchical data structure consisting of objects called
atoms. An atom can be a parent to other atoms or it can contain media or
edit data, but it cannot do both. The regular (and free) version of Quicktime
allows you to play these files from any source--you can play files on your
hard drive or ones embedded into web pages on the Internet. Quicktime is
a multimedia development, storage, and playback technology from Apple.
Of course, compressing a MOV file can help save storage space and make
it easier to download and distribute the video file. It is a proprietary
format, but playable on both Apple and Windows-based computers. Apple provides
a version of QuickTime for free (and is automatically installed with the
latest versions of iTunes) that can easily handle the MOV video files.
The .mov file format is a common video file used by both Mac and PC computers.
The ability to contain abstract data references for the media data, and
the separation of the media data from the media offsets and the track edit
lists means that QuickTime is particularly suited for editing, as it is
capable of importing and editing in place (without data copying). QuickTime
was developed by Apple for use as a standard media application for the
Mac operating system. If you want to play MOV files on your computer, you'll
have to download Apple's own Quicktime player from its website. Because
both MOV and MP4 containers can use the same MPEG-4 codecs, they are mostly
interchangeable in a QuickTime-only environment. MP4, being an international
standard, has more support. This is especially true on hardware devices,
such as the Sony PSP and various DVD players; on the software side, most
DirectShow / Video for Windows codec packs include an MP4 parser, but not
one for MOV.
What is 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP) for use on 3G mobile phones but can also be played on some
2G and 4G phones. Most 3G capable mobile phones support the playback and
recording of video in 3GP format (memory, maximum filesize for playback
and recording, and resolution limits exist and vary). These extensions
were registered by the registration authority for code-points in ISO base
media file format ("MP4 Family" files). 3GPP is the new worldwide
standards for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd
generation, high-speed wireless networks. Some cell phones use the .mp4
extension for 3GP video. 3GPP file format was designed for GSM-based Phones
and may have the filename extension ".3gp". The 3GP file type
is primarily associated with '3GPP'. The MP4 and the AVC file format specifications
described usage of MPEG-4 content in the ISO base media file format. It
stores video streams as MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264),
and audio streams as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC or HE-AAC. The Macintosh
type is: 3GPP. Audio imported from CD onto a PlayStation 3 when it is set
to encode to the MPEG-4 AAC codec will copy onto USB devices in the 3GP
format. Designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio and video
files between 3G cell phones and over the Internet; commonly used by mobile
phones that support video capture. 3GP is defined in the ETSI 3GPP technical
specification. The 3GP is used on 3G mobile phones but can also be played
on some 2G and 4G phones. 3GPP is worldwide standard for the creation,
delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless
