What is XVID?
XviD is an open source MPEG-4 video codec library distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. The availability of source code for programmers makes it possible to have Xvid running on many different platforms. Also, even in the unlikely case the original Xvid programmers may discontinue development, Xvid could still be made available to new platforms or new operating systems by anyone interested without involvement of the original developers. There are a number of reasons for using XviD: XviD is free, and can be obtained free of charge and is shipped together with many hardware devices; While being free, XviD offers outstanding quality and performance clearly surprising expensive, competing products; XviD allows you to create video for interoperable exchange with portable or home multimedia devices as XviD is widely supported in hardware; Being open-source, XviD is future-proof and secure to use. XviD-compressed videos can be 200 times smaller than the source video, with the visual quality well intact. In 2002, XviD had tension with Sigma Designs, which released the REALmagic MPEG-4 video codec. Later, it became evident that the codec was pretty much based on XviD technology, which was fraught with a serious copyright infringement issue. The source code, however, was placed under a restrictive license and only members of the DivX Advanced Research Centre (DARC) had write access to the project CVS. Next to delivering great quality video, Xvid is also very fast both for de- and encoding. Special optimizations also for the very latest features of PC processors like hyperthreading, dual-core or SSE3 instruction set guarantee high-performance video playback and creation.

What is H.264?
H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding) is a standard for video compression, and is currently one of the most commonly used formats for the recording, compression, and distribution of high definition video. A decoder that conforms to a given level is required to be capable of decoding all bitstreams that are encoded for that level and for all lower levels. AVCHD is a high-definition recording format designed by Sony and Panasonic that uses H.264 (conforming to H.264 while adding additional application-specific features and constraints). In December 2001, VCEG and the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG - ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11) formed a Joint Video Team (JVT), with the charter to finalize the video coding standard. Both the Blu-ray Disc format and the now-discontinued HD DVD format include the H.264/AVC High Profile as one of 3 mandatory video compression formats. A hardware H.264 encoder can be an ASIC or an FPGA. An FPGA is a general programmable chip. To use an FPGA as a hardware encoder, an H.264 encoder design is required to customize the chip for the application. A full HD H.264 encoder could run on a single low cost FPGA chip by 2009 (High profile, level 4.1, 1080p, 30fps). Apple has official adopted H.264 as the format for QuickTime. The maximum bit rate for High Profile is 1.25 times that of the Base/Extended/Main Profiles, 3 times for Hi10P, and 4 times for Hi422P/Hi444PP. For example, a level of support within a profile will specify the maximum picture resolution, frame rate, and bit rate that a decoder may be capable of using. For temporal bitstream scalability (i.e., the presence of a sub-bitstream with a smaller temporal sampling rate than the main bitstream), complete access units are removed from the bitstream when deriving the sub-bitstream.
