What is M4V?
M4V is a standard file format for the popular Apple iPod devices. Most
video files downloaded from the iTunes store are not authorized for duplication
by anyone other than the copyright holder and thus are stored in protected
M4V files. Unprotected M4V files may be recognized and played by other
video players by changing the file extension from ".m4v" to ".mp4."
M4V is the common but non-standard use of the MPEG-4 file extensions. It
is due to the popularity of Apple's iPod and the iTunes Store. M4V can
be read by all Mac products, like iPhone and iPod Touch, but it is not
widely readable in non-Mac devices and programs. By embedding the video
in your site rather than linking to it, you ensure that you do not lose
traffic from your site when visitors follow the link. Many video editors
will save files as nonprotected M4V files due to their high quality and
relatively small file size. It can also be played with the BS Player Pro.
M4V is a Mac-based file extension used in the iTunes store. If you download
any videos from iTunes, it will have the M4V extension. To play a protected
M4V file, your computer must be authorized (using iTunes) with the account
that was used to purchase the video. The format, with DRM removed, can
also be played in the webOS Video Player for use on the Palm Pre, Palm
Pixi smartphones. Although many iTunes videos are made freely available,
some require purchase before they can be downloaded. It is most commonly
used to store digital audio and digital video streams, but can also be
used to store other data such as subtitles and still images. Although the
format is used by the Apple iTunes Store to distribute video, third-party
videos can be encoded as M4V files since it is an open format.
What is Xvid?
Xvid codec is a free open-source alternative to the DivX codec and is based
on the same ISO specification for MPEG-4. The Xvid codec is a very lightweight
codec for the encoding of video data from standard to very high definition.
While you can obtain Xvid free of charge, the quality of the codec is outstanding
and surpasses that of competing, expensive products. The Xvid encoder has
won several awards and has been found in independent tests to provide superior
picture quality and more efficient video compression than any other comparable
video codec. As an implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2, Xvid uses many patented
technologies. For this reason, Xvid 0.9.x versions were not licensed in
countries where these software patents are recognized. The video is usually
combined with MP3 or AC3 audio to enable both high quality video and audio.
These factors and the fact that the codec is distributed for free has contributed
to the success of the format. The source code, however, was placed under
a restrictive license and only members of the DivX Advanced Research Centre
(DARC) had write access to the project CVS. Files encoded with global motion
compensation, Qpel, MPEG quantization, multiple B-frames or files that
exceed the VBV limitations may not play back properly on DivX Certified
hardware devices. With the 1.0.x releases, a GNU GPL v2 license is used
with no explicit geographical restriction. However, the legal usage of
Xvid may still be restricted by local laws. XviD, as a file type, is an
AVI file with video encoded with XviD codec. GNU-licensed 1.0.x releases
enjoyed greater freedom, although there are still legislative restrictions
on XviD use in some regions.
